What is Diabetes?
|
|
Diabetes is a common
endocrine disorder of cats. It is caused by insufficient production of the
hormone insulin by the pancreas (juvenile diabetes) or by inadequate response
of the body's cells to insulin (adult-onset diabetes). Because diabetic
cats cannot utilize glucose (a sugar) properly, they develop high blood
sugar levels and sugar in the urine. This causes excessive urination and
thirst. Progression of the disease leads to further metabolic disturbances
causing vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, dehydration, and damage to
the eyes, nerves, kidneys and blood vessels. |
|
Although diabetes affects
cats of any breed, sex, or age, it most often occurs in older, obese cats, and
females are more commonly affected than males. Some
diabetic cats benefit from diets rich in fiber since it tends to slow
digestion, preventing sudden spikes in blood glucose. |
The Science.
|
|
Almost no research has been
conducted on the role of micronutrients on diabetes in cats. However,
there is an impressive amount of research with humans and laboratory
animals which indicates that diabetics are more often deficient in certain
vitamins and minerals than normal subjects. In addition, supplements of
some vitamins and minerals can improve the body's control of blood sugar
levels and increase insulin sensitivity. These effects slow the
progression of the disease and help prevent some of the debilitating
consequences of diabetes such as cataracts, nerve damage, and kidney
dysfunction. A brief summary of some of these effects is given in Table
1. |
Why Choose Pet Renewal® Feline
Diabetic Formula?
|
|
Based on the current
science, a supplement was designed to include levels of nutrients
appropriate for diabetic cats. These nutrients are usually not provided in
sufficient quantities by most commercial diets. Therefore, use of this
supplement is recommended at the very first indication of diabetes as a
means of slowing the progression of the disease, thus delaying the time
when insulin therapy is needed, and keeping your cat healthier longer. |
Dosage.
|
|
We recommend sprinkling 1
level scoop per day over food. |
