High
Levels of Anti-Oxidant Vitamins to Fight Age-Related Problems
|
|
|
As a result of better
control of infections and parasite diseases and improved nutrition early
in life, dogs are living longer. As a result, these pets are faced with
many of the same health problems associated with aging that occur in
people. |
|
For example, the immune
response (the ability to fight infectious disease and cancer) decreases
with age. Diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and heart disease occur with
increased frequency. Visual loss due to cataracts and retinal
degeneration increase and mental disorder (cognitive dysfunction syndrome)
can emerge. The age at which these disorders are obvious as well as their
rate of progression can be influenced by nutrition, particularly vitamins
and minerals. |
|
Unfortunately, there has
been very little research on the influence of nutrition on age-related
health problems in dogs. There is however, a massive amount of research in
humans and laboratory animals on this subject which was used in designing
an appropriate vitamin-mineral supplement for aging dogs, Senior
Canine Formula. |
Why choose Pet Renewal® Senior
Canine Formula?
|
|
Although most commercial dog
foods are well-designed and have adequate levels of nutrients for growing
and "middle-aged" dogs, very few have sufficiently high levels
of many micro-nutrients to address age-related chronic health problems.
Therefore, a vitamin-mineral supplement designed to furnish such nutrients
offers a simple way to provide these nutrients. That supplement is Pet
Renewal Senior Canine Formula. |
The Science.
|
|
This supplement was designed
by starting with the present recommendations for dogs (Nutrient
Requirements of Dogs, National Academy Press, Washington, D.C. 1985)
and modifying them based on the scientific evidence that some nutrients
have a significant impact in slowing the development of many age related
problems. In addition, some nutrients are required at higher levels in an
aged dog. |
|
Specifically high levels of
the antioxidant nutrients Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Selenium are included
to prevent oxidative damage in tissues which contributes to heart disease,
cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and cataracts. These nutrients also help
maintain the immune response. Vitamin K is added as an aid in preventing
bone loss, and Biotin to maintain hair and nail health. Higher levels of
Vitamin B-12 and B-6 are included since their requirement increases in the
elderly dog. High levels of other "B" vitamins (B-1, B-2,
Niacin, and Folic Acid) are also included since they may lower the risk of
heart disease and mental decline. |
|
Most of the diseases
discussed develop slowly, with many pathological changes occurring in the
dog's body before they emerge as a clinical problem. Therefore, it is
recommended that this supplement be given before the dog is really old,
for example starting at 6-8 years. |
